OrganizingWin rate goes up when members assist (May 2007) By Dave De Sousa, Organizer Recently, a young Local 115 member asked me why our union is so committed to organizing and why we direct so much energy to this effort. Great questions. I repeated to him what was told to me many years ago. “If we turn our backs on non-union workers (and those represented by rat unions) we condemn them to lower wages and worse working conditions and we condemn ourselves to competing with those workers.” The message is simple. Reach out to those workers who do not have the benefits and protection of a Local 115 collective agreement. Tell them about the benefits and help organize them into our union. This will increase our influence at the bargaining table. Better collective agreements will result which will benefit everyone in our industry. With this in mind, our greatest assets for successful organizing are our own members. When opportunity knocks and our members speak out with words of encouragement, our win rate improves dramatically. On a final note, I wish to welcome to our union the recently organized workers at Ritchie Smith Feeds Inc. (Abbotsford) and Freightliner of Kelowna Ltd. Member involvement played a major part in both of these successful organizing drives. Special thanks go out to Brothers Joe Backus and Trent Kunz. Live better—organize. |
