DispatchIt must be even harder to recruit in other countries (December 2007) By Malcolm Oliver, Dispatcher A high number of Operating Engineers remained working in the fall. The need for skilled workers should not slow down as long as the contractors are building Olympic venues. The orders for mobile crane operators and tower crane operators are the most difficult to fill at this time. A few years ago, I read an article which stated that there were only three countries in the developed world with enough young people to recruit for employment. These countries were Turkey, Ireland, and Canada. It’s very difficult to find skilled workers in our part of the world; it must be almost impossible to find them in a country that has a shortage of young people to draw on. The Operating Engineers Training Plan holds an information session once a month to inform prospective members about training courses and the need for skilled workers to work union. For anyone interested in working in the construction industry, these sessions are a great opportunity to learn the steps they need to take to become successful in the field. If you know someone who would like to learn more about the Operating Engineers and the training available, advise them to call the Training Plan at 604-299-7764 or Dispatch at 604-473-5231. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all members a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. |
