District 3
With your help, more organizing success expected (December 2007)  By Gary Kinnear, Member Representative I would like to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on behalf of the District 3 staff—Sherry Braithwaite, Brad Gerow and myself. It has been a busy year and we are looking forward to even bigger and better things next year. This past year, we had a couple of organizing successes with Kelowna Freightliner and Gable Construction. Kelowna Freightliner has an agreement and I hope we have an agreement with Gable Construction soon. There are many ways you can help with organizing. Speak to your friends and acquaintances about the benefits of belonging to a legitimate union. Talk to the many members who are working non-union or rat union. If there’s interest, call us at the District Office and we’ll set up a meeting to talk further. Your active participation in organizing will grow this union. Expanded membership brings improvements in pensions and benefits. Let’s all make an effort to do our part to organize in 2008. Work has begun on the Number 5 generator at Revelstoke Dam. The civil work will be done by Peter Kiewit Sons and the generator itself by Voith Siemens Hydro. PKS started work in early November and Voith Siemens is scheduled for February 2008. We will have six to ten operators on site. This should give a nice boost to our members in Revelstoke. The plan is to begin with Revelstoke #5 and then move on to Mica #5, then back to Revelstoke for #6 and finish at Mica for #6. All this will take several years and will depend on cost and demand. We are still waiting for highway projects to be announced. It is rumoured that work will be under way at Hoffman Bluffs east of Kamloops in addition to the continued four-laning of the highway north of Vernon to Armstrong, and continuation of the work at Gretta Ranch in Summerland. We have also heard about work between Winfield and Oyama. Hopefully, all of these jobs will become a reality. Have a safe and prosperous 2008. |
