District 2
Members benefiting from steady work
(October 2007)

By Tim Cullen, Member Representative
We have been fortunate to keep our members on Vancouver Island fairly busy. The utility and paving companies have enough work to keep their crews working and occasionally they contact us for more workers.

We have ratified a four-year agreement with Eaglestar Golf Inc., DBA Morningstar Golf Course. We also met with Paul Kim, the new owner of Eaglecrest Golf Course located in Qualicum Beach. We have requested that Eaglecrest match the old Morningstar collective agreement.

The first offer presented to United Rentals on Vancouver Island was turned down and we are currently waiting for a counter offer from the company.

We finally had a proposal exchange with Victoria Materials Depot and further meetings will be held if necessary.

Member representatives are going over the proposals from the Brandt Tractor employees and putting together a package. Once we have exchanged proposals with the company at our first meeting in February 2008, we will forward them to your attention. If you have any questions, please contact me or your member representative.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Construction Aggregates Producers Pit in Victoria is finally closing. This was a very profitable operation that provided a lot of work to our members for many years. We hoped that Construction Aggregates would have opened or begun developing the Sayward Pit by now so employees could be offered jobs at the new location. It does not look like this is going to happen in the near future.

I hope the relatively healthy work picture continues through the rest of 2007 and well into 2008.
