District 1
Positive side of flooding (July 2007) By Frank Carr, Member RepresentativeThe threat of flooding from an unusually high snow pack in the province produced a lot of extra work for Local 115 members. The demand for materials for all the dike improvements throughout the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley left the quarries and gravel pits barely able to meet orders for sand and gravel for ongoing construction projects. Paving companies are finally getting steady work after all the rain-outs. Imperial Paving Ltd. is widening 176th St. (Highway 15) in Surrey and B&B Contracting Ltd. is just up the street working on Highway 10 in Cloverdale. Vancouver Pile Driving is constructing concrete caissons in the yard for the Deltaport Expansion. Fraser River Pile and Dredge has completed the first phase of dredging and is now modifying the cutter suction dredge by extending the ladder and cutter head. Hydraulic dredge negotiations are ongoing. The agreement expired at the end of April. Once negotiations are completed, a ratification vote will be held. The Golden Ears Bridge project is starting to take shape. Piers are complete. Hydraulic and self-erecting tower cranes are being used to cap the other three piers. Each pier will have a tower crane on it. One tower crane has already been erected on the Langley side. If you get a chance, drive down and have a look. The project can be viewed from the dikes on either side of the river in Maple Ridge or Langley. I hope you’re having a great summer! In the May 2007 issue, Frank Carr’s report ended with the following sentence: “In July, it will be mandatory for all crane operators to be registered and certified.” This is incorrect. The correct sentence is: “After July 2007 it will be mandatory for all crane operators to be registered, then certified.” |
