Local union election coming up

By Brad MacKenzie, President
Abundant work opportunities and our Diamond Anniversary made 2006 a very good year for members of the International Union of Operating Engineers and their families.

It was, without a doubt, the best year I’ve ever had as a member of this Local Union.

I hope you all enjoyed the CD that was sent along with the last issue of OE News. The commemorative book Firing Iron 2006 should arrive on your doorstep any day now. I hope you take the time to read it. It contains the history of our fantastic union, along with many great pictures and stories about members and projects over the past 75 years.

We expect this to be another year of abundant working opportunities for the vast majority of members of Local 115. It is expected these opportunities will continue for the next couple of years.

Even with these opportunities, we must not forget that we have an aging work force and we must continue to organize. It is imperative that we organize new bargaining units and sign up new members at our existing units. Remember, a union that does not organize new bargaining units, dies. It is your responsibility, as a member, to encourage skilled operators to join our union with its long and proud history.

Members should also remember to keep their membership dues in good standing.

Local Union Executive Board elections are coming up. Your membership dues must be paid up and current in the month of June 2007 in order to cast your ballot. I encourage all members to take part in this very important event. Make a commitment to be informed and cast your ballot for the candidates of their choice. Nominations take place in May, at your district union meetings, and the election will be held in August. Ballots will be sent to your home address, so please be sure we have your correct address.

As you start your day, remember you belong to a union that is Simply the Best. Work proud, work safe!
