Are you in the conversation?By Lionel Railton, CEB, PPAC, Administrator In September of 2006, the Campbell government commenced a Conversation on Health with the citizens of British Columbia. The intent of the exercise is to give British Columbians the opportunity to ask direct questions and give input on the health care system. You can participate in the following ways: • By telephone, toll free, 1-866-884-2055 • Online at www.bcconversationonhealth.ca • In person, by registering and attending one of the 16 public forums throughout the province, or • By direct mail, care of, Ministry of Health, Conversation on Health, 5-3, 1515 Blanshard Street, Victoria, B.C. V8W 2C8. This is a golden opportunity for you to tell the government what’s on your mind. I would encourage each of you to take five minutes to call, send a note or e-mail asking the government to step up and deliver on the promises of shorter wait times, more doctors and health care professionals, proper support for the system as a whole. Most importantly, ask them to stop funding other government initiatives off the backs of health care workers. Clearly, the health care system is in transition and, as history has proven time and again, when governments move forward with initiatives such as the Liberals’ Conversation on Health, we can be assured change is on the horizon. Given the government’s past record on new or modified social programs, we’d better be prepared for higher costs and fewer programs—Fair Pharmacare program comes to mind. In Premier Campbell’s lead up to the Conversation on Health Care, he has made it clear that he envisions a greater role for the private sector and the need for future health care spending curtailment. Remember the Minister of Finance’s recent comment that health care spending is unsustainable. Participation will give you a voice and an opportunity for input. Procrastination will leave you with the hangover of a health care system that may not meet your family’s needs. Now is the time to act. As always, if we can be of assistance with this or any other benefit or pension matter, please feel free to call upon us. |
