Kemess members ratify new agreement
The members at Kemess Mine voted 72% in favour of accepting the new collective agreement. A deadline for the vote was set for April 8 and 245 ballots were returned by that date, with 177 in favour, 67 opposed and 1 spoiled. The bargaining committee at Northgate Minerals Kemess Mine met 21 times with the company. A tentative offer was presented to the members and rejected by 73%. Mediator Mark Atkinson conducted meetings in Prince George with both sides beginning on March 10. Mediation ended March 11. Both sides were given a few days to review his final recommendation for settlement and the strike deadline was extended to March 31. The bargaining committee recommended acceptance of the agreement. The contract covering the 300 members of Operating Engineers Local 115 who work at the mine site expired on Dec. 31, 2007. |
