When it comes to safety, ask questions

Employers are required to provide all new and young workers with workplace orientations about the hazards, safety requirements and evacuation procedures of every workplace they enter on behalf of that employer.

WorkSafeBC (formerly WCB) added regulations under Part 3 of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations to strengthen workers’ rights to know about health risks, industry hazards, safety hazards, emergency requirements, safety rules and much more.

Four basic rights are now entrenched in the legislation. You have a right to:

• refuse unsafe work

• participate in workplace safety activities

• know about workplace safety and health hazards

• be free of reprisals (discrimination) for your use of these rights
