$14 billion transportation initiative
Next step: Project Labour Agreements In a news release, the Operating Engineers Local 115 stated its support for the premier’s announcement of a $14 billion investment over 12 years in the province’s transportation infrastructure. Business Manager Gary Kroeker also took the opportunity to remind Premier Gordon Campbell that project labour agreements can go a long way to guaranteeing certainty and stability in relation to one significant component of every construction project—labour costs. “In this hot construction environment, we’re seeing skyrocketing fuel and material costs and a serious shortage of skilled tradespeople,” he said. “Project labour agreements protect workers and management and address the critical need for apprenticeship training. They also ensure fairness for foreign workers who may have to be called in to keep projects on time. “A highly successful model is currently in place for hydroelectric projects,” Kroeker noted. “The Allied Hydro Council Agreement has provided decades of stability and predictability while encouraging equity and local hiring.” Such an agreement was also used very successfully on the Vancouver Island Highway, he said. “Operating Engineers living in these communities understand the urgency of these projects and are ready to apply their skills and experience. Our training facility is already preparing young operators who are eager to lend their support to this initiative. We look forward to hearing more about this transportation plan,” Kroeker said. |
